Bio
Ani Cordero created and fronted a new bilingual indie-rock band in Tucson, Arizona in early 1999. She borrowed members of Tucson's Calexico and Giant Sand and called the group by her Puerto Rican family name, Cordero.
By 2000, Ani had moved to New York City and reformed the band with her husband, music/art star, Chris Verene (formerly of Merge Records' The Rock*A*Teens and D.Q.E. ) and a revolving backing band that boasted members Eric Biondo (Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra) Jon Petrow (Cloud Room, Gachupin), Lynn Wright (Gachupin, James Hall), F.A. Blasco (Interpol, Slow Whitey) and Paul Watson (Sparklehorse). Cordero eventually cemented the line-up by adding the sensitive horn and dramatic keyboard playing of Omar Akil (nephew of hit songwriter Frankie Lymon) and melodic and danceable bass playing of Eric Eble (Reid Pailey Trio).
Cordero quickly grew to a national level through three albums on Amy Ray's Daemon Records , touring nationally supporting Los Lobos , Indigo Girls, Trailer Bride, Calexico and appearing in major US cities with Ozomatli , Neko Case (part of her Tigers sessions), Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra , Luna , Robi Draco Rosa , El Vez , Julie Doiron, Rosie Thomas , Michael Tolcher , Josh Joplin , Lucero , Los Abandoned , Smokey and Miho , Jesse Malin , Tim Easton.
In 2006, Cordero inked a new record deal with the Chicago-based label, Bloodshot Records and expanded their reach with the release of their third studio album "En Este Momento" and an ever-growing reputation for blazing live shows.
2007 highlights included tour dates with The Wailers (Bob Marley), licensing of their song "Mia" in the Hollywood Movie "The Heartbreak Kid" and the recording of their latest and greatest new album to be released in late Spring 2008.
